History: The North Dakota Lottery was created in 2003, after an amendment to the state’s Constitution was passed allowing the Lottery to conduct multi-state, online games. Tickets for Powerball® went on sale on March 25, 2004, making North Dakota the forty-first state to introduce a lottery, and the twenty-fifth jurisdiction to participate in Powerball®. As demand has grown, additional games have been introduced. A portion of every ticket sold is transferred to the state's general fund for the benefit of all North Dakotans. Transfers are also made to the Compulsive Gambling Prevention and Treatment Fund and the Multi-Jurisdictional Drug Task Force Grant Fund. Since 2004, the lottery has transferred over $74 million to these funds. The North Dakota Lottery encourages players to be responsible in the amount of play.
