State Capitol to host Pride of Dakota Day, Farmers Market

Post Date: Sep 15 2015

More than 50 North Dakota businesses will transform the statehouse into a shopping mall for locally-made products, Thursday, Sept. 17, during the annual Pride of Dakota Day at the Capitol.

“This is a showcase for North Dakota businesses and the Pride of Dakota program, giving Capitol visitors and state employees an opportunity to see the range of products made right here in our state,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “The owners and employees of these Pride of Dakota businesses will be selling, sampling and talking about their products.”

Vendor booths will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Capitol’s Memorial Hall, Legislative Hall and west end ground floor.

Pride of Dakota companies manufacture a wide range of products, including home décor, foods and condiments, apparel, personal care items, recordings, paper goods and more.

Goehring also encouraged Capitol visitors and employees to take in the farmers market from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the top of the Capitol loop on the south lawn.

“More than a dozen vendors will be selling fresh-picked North Dakota fruits and vegetables, meat and honey,” said Goehring. “The market is a great place to meet the growers and stock up on seasonal produce.”

The Pride of Dakota program, administered by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Marketing and Information Division, provides member companies with cooperative marketing and promotional events, such as in-store demonstrations, Pride of Dakota Day and the Harvest and Holiday Showcases. The program also provides educational opportunities and representation at regional, national and international marketing expositions. More than 500 North Dakota companies are Pride of Dakota members.

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture supports farmers markets, food co-ops, community-supported agriculture (CSAs), community orchards, roadside stands and pick-your-own gardens in the state. Most of these are listed in the Local Foods Directory, published by NDDA and available by calling 328-2231 or (800) 242-7535, emailing ndda@nd.gov or online at http://www.nd.gov/ndda/files/resource/LocalFoodsDirectory2015.pdf.
