Pottery that’s Dishwasher Safe? Davy Pottery Makes It Possible
When you think of pottery, you probably don’t think functional. It seems to be more of a special occasion, special purpose sort of thing. Davy Pottery is changing that perception, however. Susan Davy, creator of Davy Pottery, makes functional stoneware pottery fit for daily use. According to her website, this is what she values most – functionality. And Susan doesn’t just claim that her pottery is functional; every piece is dishwasher, microwave and oven safe.
Davy Pottery offers a wide variety of stoneware including mugs, dinner plates, serving/baking dishes, bowls and even teapots. They also offer vases and candle holders (often in a 2-in-1 package), planters and casseroles. And every piece is customizable with your choice of glaze – multi-blue, multi-green, copper mottled red, solid blue and flax ash.
They’ve also gone beyond the traditional by offering bird houses and feeders crafted out of clay and finished with a brass or copper roof. The Davy Pottery website boasts that these bird houses/feeders and even squirrel chew-proof.
Interestingly enough, the creator of this beautiful, functional pottery did not intend to become a potter. She and one of her sisters took an interest in pottery while Susan was getting her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Jamestown College. Soon, she became so absorbed in her pottery that she left nursing after only 5 years to be a potter full time. Susan is now one of only 2 full-time potters in North Dakota.
Susan’s love for pottery began as a family affair and continues to be as the Davy Pottery studio is located on her paternal grandparents’ farmstead in rural North Dakota. It was originally built by Susan’s father, husband and architect brother in 1982. The building has grown as the business has as well, requiring 2 additions. And as the amount of business has grown, so has the number of employees. Susan now works with a team to create her shaped-to-perfection stoneware.
